How to Install GApps

Download and Preparation

Before installing a GApps package, you need to pick the version that matches the CPU architecture of the target device and the Android base of your desired custom ROM. Keep in mind some OEMs deliberately ship ARM32 firmware on ARM64 devices, so consult with the custom ROM maintainer to determine platform compatibility. In case you’re going to flash a custom ROM that ships with integrated Google apps, then you don’t need to install a standalone GApps package.

To know the CPU architecture, run the following command using a terminal emulator app on your device:

Crudely speaking, if you have a smartphone that’s fairly recent and you’re planning to install a custom ROM based on Android 11, download one of the ARM64 GApps for Android 11 from the aforementioned list.

For the actual flashing process, we’ll assume you have a custom recovery like TWRP installed and (optionally) have root access. If not, we have guides on how to root your Android device and how to install TWRP.

Flashing GApps from TWRP

Warning:  In most cases, the GApps package must be flashed before booting into the custom ROM for the first time! It’s always recommended to factory reset and format data to clear out any possible residue of a previously installed GApps distribution.

1. Make sure your computer has ADB and Fastboot. Setup instructions can be found here.
2. Download both the custom ROM package and the matching GApps package on your computer.

3. Reboot the target device into recovery mode using the appropriate key-combo or using ADB:

4. Now tap on Wipe, Factory Reset, and finally Format Data to continue with the cleanup process. This will remove encryption and delete all files stored in the internal storage.
5. Return to the main menu.
6. Sideload the custom ROM ZIP package:

7. Without rebooting, tap on the back button, then repeat the same process for the GApps package.

8. The TWRP screen on the target device should show the installation progress.
9. Once you have installed everything successfully, tap on the Reboot System button.
10. Voila!

Validation

If everything goes right, you should get the Google apps and services ready to use once you reboot.

LineageOS 18.1 with GApps

Most GApps distributions and custom ROMs support OTA survival, which means it’s not necessary to re-flash a GApps package when you install a ROM update. A major version update is another story though, as you have to locate the appropriate GApps package for the new Android base and if necessary, make a clean install.

Google Apps — службы и приложения, поставляемые компанией Google для использования собственных интернет сервисов. Например видеохостинг YouTube,  почта Gmail, Books, Maps, Google Диск, Photo, Google Play, Blogpost, Поиск, Google + и многие другие.

Если Вы используете родную, официальную прошивку, то наверняка данные службы и приложения уже установлены в ваше устройство, однако исключением могут быть китайские Android смартфоны и планшеты.

Если же установлена одна из неофициальных прошивок, таких как  или , то данных служб в них уже не найдете. Поэтому необходимо Gapps скачать и установить из меню кастомного Recovery. После этого вы сможете использовать все сервисы гугл на кастомных прошивках в полном объеме!

Где скачать Gapps?

Скачать их можно с как с официальных страниц разработчиков кастомных прошивок, либо же с альтернативных ресурсов. Ниже будут представлены на лучшие из всех доступных вариантов:

Можно воспользоваться более легким и удобным способ установки свежих версий Gapps, воспользовавшись приложением OpenGapps.

Новый простой способ установки Gapps

Для этого вам понадобится приложение Open Gapps Manager, которое работает по принципу:

1. Скачал приложение Open Gapps Manager и установил его на свое Android устройство;

2. Зашел в установленное приложение, после определение архитектуры устройства, скачать самую новую версию приложений Google;

3. При наличие Root прав и установленного Recovery можно быстро установить пакет приложений Google, либо перезагрузиться в Recovery и установить вручную необходимо установить скачанные Gapps из Recovery.

Скачать новую версию приложения Open Gapps Manager можно на  или загрузить с официального магазина Goolge Play (рекомендовано).

Иногда бывает так, что после прошивки смартфона не хватает некоторых существенных приложений. Без них полноценная работа аппарата невозможна. Ни программы не скачать, ни игры. Как с этим бороться? Просто доустановить нужные приложения. Но беда в том, что они «вшиты» в прошивку, и просто установить apk не получится. Такие программы предоставляются компанией Google и называются Gapps. Что это за зверь, мы разберем чуть ниже.

На каких устройствах это будет работать?

Условно все устройства можно поделить на следующие классы (в порядке убывания удобности):

• Устройства с официальной поддержкой lineageos. Наличие официального порта обычно является не только гарантией более-менее нормальной работы, но и наличия множества других прошивок под это устройство. Естественно, лучше проверять информацию (и о наличии прошивок, и о возможных сюрпризах) на 4pda/xda до покупки. К сожалению, совсем новых устройств вы там обычно не увидите.
• Устройства с неофициальными портами lineageos/других прошивок. Обычно, немного хуже, но жить все равно можно.
• Устройства без сторонних прошивок, но с root. Сложнее избавляться от bloatware и gapps (однако, с NanoDroid это теперь можно делать в автоматическом режиме). Никаких гарантий, что вы удалили все вредоносные приложения от производителя.

При выборе устройства так же нужно смотреть на:

• Собственно покрытие прошивками. Хорошее коммьюнити вокруг телефона обычно дает более крепкие гарантии на обновление прошивки, чем типичный производитель.
• Некоторые производители ограничивают возможность разблокировки загрузчика.
  • Например, у xiaomi присутствует задержка от нескольких дней до недель от привязки телефона к аккаунту до первой разблокировки.
  • Huawei недавно в принципе перестала выдавать коды разблокировки (особо не разбирался, как минимум для нескольких устройств). Фу на них, но за несколько долларов до сих пор можно купить код разблокировки на стороне.

Why GApps?

Google requires every Android device maker to follow the Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) to pass the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) so they can be allowed to pre-load their devices with Google apps and services. Custom ROM developers however can’t easily bundle these Google apps and services with their builds. As these apps are not using the Apache or GPLv2 license, bundling them within the ROM presents legal challenges.

This is exactly where the GApps packages come in. The GApps maintainers rely on build scripts that allow for the automated creation of new updated packages at regular intervals. ROM developers, on the other hand, usually build the custom ROMs in such a way that an end-user can flash a third-party GApps distribution on top of their builds and seamlessly gain the ability to use the Google Play Store or any other applications that require Google Play Services.

Keep in mind Google apps are not required to boot or run most custom ROMs. However, many users find them beneficial to take full advantage of the Android ecosystem.

Слово это, как можно догадаться, пришло к нам из английского языка — Gapps. Более того, оно является сокращением от словосочетания Google Apps, что можно перевести как приложения Google, то есть Google Play, Gmail, Play Music, Google Maps и т.д. Изначально Google Apps установлены на большинстве устройств на базе Android, будь это смартфон или планшет. Однако на некоторых прошивках из-за лицензионных ограничений приложения Гугл по умолчанию отсутствуют. В принципе, смартфоном можно пользоваться и без указанных приложений, но, к примеру, пользоваться устройством на базе Android без Play Market, мягко говоря, не очень удобно. Поэтому и предлагается установить приложения отдельно. Вернее, обычно они идут в виде установочного файла, установить который не сложнее, чем прошивку. Иногда появляется необходимость Google Play отдельным установочным файлом, если его версия более свежая.

Что такое Gapps

Gapps, или гапсы, это сокращение от словосочетания Google applications. Оно обозначает пакет приложений от компании Google: Google PlayMarket, Google Music, Google Maps, Youtube и так далее. По умолчанию он установлен  почти на все смартфоны и планшеты под управлением ОС Android – он отсутствуют лишь на моделях, предназначенных для использования на территории Китая и устройствах с пользовательской модификацей прошивки.

В первом случае отсутствие Gapps объясняется запретом работы сервисов  Google в Китае, а во втором – законы об авторском праве, запрещающие пользователям встраивать в свои модификации приложения от Google. Но запрета на самостоятельную установку нет – установочные файлы распространяются компаний «Гугл».

Что входит в состав

Существует несколько версий Gapps. Между собой они отличаются только количеством приложений, включенных в пакет. Их перечень для каждой версии приведен в таблице.

Китайские аппараты

Есть люди, которые хотят установить на чистокровных «китайцев» Gapps. Что это заведомо обречено на провал, говорить излишне. Такие телефоны просто не предназначены для работы с приложениями Google. Обычно у таких устройств настолько слабое железо, что даже «Маркет» на них работать не будет. Но если вы уверены в качестве своего «китайца» и хотите воткнуть на него Gapps, то придется изучить немало инструкций. Ибо для каждого аппарата имеются свои инструкции по установке «кастомных» прошивок и Gapps.

Конечно, «китайцы» бывают разными. Некоторые даже снабжены «вменяемой» ОС Android. Именно с ними и можно производить действия по установке Gapps. Но далеко не факт, что ваши старания увенчаются успехом. Все-таки это не оригинальные устройства. И как на них умудрились установить Android, никому не известно. Вполне возможно, что своим вмешательством в прошивку вы снесете те «костыли», на которых держится многострадальная ОС. Но во всяком случае, попробовать стоит. Вполне возможно, что после этого аппарат заработает как положено.

Если не устанавливается

Если не устанавливаются Gapps через CWM-рекавери, значит, что-то не так. Здесь есть несколько вариантов. Первый – вы скачали неверный пакет с приложениями, который не подходит к вашей прошивке. В этом случае придется перебирать все пакеты методом «научного тыка».

Второй вариант – «битое» рекавери. Бывают случаи, когда само ПО начинает глючить. Здесь единственный выход – переустановка рекавери. Обычно для установки достаточно скачать установочный пакет, «загнать» аппарат в режим Bootloader и прошить рекавери с помощью компьютера. Но в некоторых случаях придется выполнять дополнительные действия, чтобы вернуть ПО к жизни.

Третий вариант – «битая» прошивка. Как правило, сторонние прошивки не отличаются стабильностью по причине отсутствия некоторых компонентов. Именно поэтому рекомендуется устанавливать официальные. В таком случае придется заменить прошивку. Возможно, с новой будет все гораздо проще, и вам не придется возиться с Gapps. Что это самый предпочитаемый вариант, и так понятно.

How to Install GApps on Android 10 custom ROM?

All of the Gapps built for Android 10 are available in a zip file format which is designed to be flashed through a custom recovery.

This GApps is only for Android 10 based custom ROMs. Installing this GApps on any other Android custom ROM may result in bootloop.

Below is a step by step guide to install GApps on Android 10:

Соответственно, без Gapps вы не сможете установить ни одного приложения. Без этого пакета программ также будут недоступны службы YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps и многие другие.

Обычно недостатком Gapps страдают прошивки Cyanogen Mod. Вероятно, их авторы воспринимают приложения Google как ненужный рудимент, поэтому и не снабжают свои поделки такими комплектами. Вот вам еще один повод ставить только официальные прошивки

Приложения от «Гугл» характеризуются тем, что нещадно «кушают» оперативную память устройства. Если ваш девайс не может похвастать внушительным объемом «оперативки», то вполне возможно, что без Gapps вашему «питомцу» будет куда лучше. Как бы то ни было, для действий по удалению или установке Gapps придется получить на аппарате root-права или же вообще заменить прошивку. Подробнее об этом написано чуть ниже.

Differences in Gapps

As mentioned earlier, Google Apps are available in many different variants. Let’s take a look at them and see what are the major differences among all the Gapps package available.

Google Apps for Different Platforms

The following is a list of platforms supported by Google Apps and where they could run properly. They are listed as follows:

• ARM
• ARM64
• x86
• x86_64

You can read up more in detail about these platform types and what they offer in the article below. Just FYI, most of our recent phones are all based on the ARM64 architecture. So that is what you will most probably need.

ARM

ARM used to be the most popular 32-bit platform for Android phones. Almost every chipset and phone hardware before 2016 was powered by a 32-bit platform. Phones older than that period will need Gapps based on this platform. Do not try to run Gapps that were made for the 64-bit systems before that could crash your phone.

ARM64

ARM64 is the currently used, most popular platform. Almost all new Android phones and tablets are based on the 64-bit system. Phones moved on to this system in the late 2016 and the very early adopters include: Google Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X etc. Safe to say, every flagship phone since last year is based on 64-bit.

x86

Intel chipsets are very uncommon on Android phones. Only a handful of devices are based on the Intel x86 platform. One device that comes to mind is Asus Zenfone. We doubt you will hardly ever need Gapps for the x86 platform.

x86_64

Gapps for the x86_64 are more commonly used on Android emulators. All these emulators are optimized and based on Intel chipsets. And since all computers now support 64-bit systems, this should be your choice of platform when downloading Gapps for Android emulators. This is useful for development purposes or if you just want to run and install Google apps on your PC or Mac.

Gapps Variants – Which one should you download?

Here is a list of the variants offered and the differences among them. From here you can decide the one you want to download and why. In our opinion, you should go with the nano variant as it is enough for you to start using Google services and apps and you can later download more apps as needed.

There are seven different variants available. They are listed as below:

• pico
• nano
• micro
• mini
• full
• stock
• super

For more details on them and which you to go for, you can read all about them in the following paragraphs.

pico

This is the bare minimum set of GApps that is required to run Google services on an Android device. It only comes with a small set of Google apps like the Google Search app, YouTube, Google Play Store etc. This is a popular choice by many if you are careful about what apps use your internal storage of the phone.

nano

nano is our favourite choice of GApps. It comes with the basic Google functionality and some more that is not available from the Google Play Store. It is slightly bigger in size than pico and gets the job done well. This is the package / variant we have covered below for you to download.

micro

micro GApps package include everything from pico and nano packages. Plus, it also comes with a limited set of apps i.e. Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Assistant and some extra functionality as well.

mini

This set brings even more Google apps along with the basic functionality. You can expect most of the popular Google apps included as part of this package.

full

If you own an OEM based phone and your custom ROM already includes the stock apps from the OEM’s platform, you should go with the full GApps package. Mainly because the full package will install all the recommended Google apps and will not replace the OEM-based stock apps.

stock

This is very similar to the full package, but this will replace any non-Google apps available. For example, if there is already a Calendar app available in the ROM, it will be replaced with the Google Calendar version from the Play Store.

super

If you are like me who wants every Google app installed on the phone, then this Super package is the way to go for. It comes with every Google app that has ever shipped with a phone. You can expect apps like Google Sheets, Slides or Docs also included as part of this package.

Минусы

Сбор сведений о пользователе. Да, как бы заезжено это ни звучало, но это так. Собирается максимум из хранимой на устройстве информации. Таргетированная реклама — основа бизнеса Google, поэтому ему нужно как-то окупать бесплатный Android и все связанные с ним сервисы. Все они существуют только для сбора и анализа сведений и последующей продажи. Параноить тут совершенно не нужно, просто нужно принять это как факт.

Из сборки сведений вытекает еще одна неприятная особенность: расход трафика. И хотя это актуально только для устройств с 3G, все равно неприятно, когда драгоценные мегабайты тарифа уходят в никуда. Впрочем, имея устройство с root-привилегиями можно запретить всем ненавистным приложениям выходить в Интернет.

Расход батареи также увеличивается: гугловские приложения запускают множество сервисов, которые неизвестно что делают в фоне, вдобавок некоторые приложения от сторонних разработчиков взаимодействуют с gapps. Особенно актуально это для игр.

Естественно, gapps занимают место в памяти устройства. В зависимости от версии размер колеблется в пределах ~160 мегабайт. Для современных устройств это может и мало, но не все гонятся за новинками. Да и в любом случае, каждому пользователю есть куда деть даже такой объем.

Со временем возможности gapss растут, и если они обновляются, то требуют больше ресурсов. То есть, больше трафика, больше места, процессорного времени и ОЗУ. Не будем сейчас говорить о криворукости тамошних программистов, эти неподтвержденные данные — тема отдельного разговора. На некоторых устройствах (например, на моем двухдовалом планшете с 1Гб ОЗУ) gapps сильно тормозили работу устройства. При включении и снятии блокировки наблюдались фризы в несколько секунд.

Ну и в заключении несколько слов о приобретаемом у гугла контенте. Дело в том, что при определенных обстоятельствах доступ к нему может быть запрещен или ограничен. Например, открытые книги без доступа к Интернет или прослушивание музыки в другом регионе и т.д.

А еще opensource-адепты негодуют из-за проприетарности gapps.
