Pidgin

Pidgin is a fully open source, multi-platform messaging client that uses the XMPP protocol. XMPP allows you to link to accounts such as Slack and AIM, ICQ, IRC, and Yahoo Messenger, if you are one of the internet oldies.

Telegram

Telegram is one of the best known, but not often used, partially open-source alternatives to Whatsapp (Telegram vs. Whatsapp). It functions as a standalone messenger or as a drop-in replacement for your SMS app on mobile.

Conversations with Telegram feature encryption and threading. Overall, it’s a great and safe alternative to some of the less secure messaging applications out there. However, while the Telegram app is open source, the servers which handle Telegram’s data is not open source.

YakYak

Google Hangouts has its supporters and detractors, but one of the things holding it back is the lack of a half-decent desktop app. So third-party developers have come in to fill the gap. The best one, in my opinion, is YakYak (yeah I know, terrible name), but the software itself is fantastic.

It works just like any other chat software for the desktop. Start conversations, receive them, get notifications of new chats, and send images. There is also audio and video integration, but that opens up in Google Chrome.

If the color scheme doesn’t suit, you can change it to blue or black. And it is all portable, no installation required. Cool, right? This might actually make me start using Google Hangouts.

System Tools

WinDirStat

WinDirStat allows users to generate a visual representation of what’s stored on their storage drive. The resulting visual depiction represents each file type using different colors (orange for text files, for example) and sizes (larger blocks mean larger amounts of data).

WinDirStat is the best tool for those who want to slim down a hard drive. Just avoid deleting any programs or files in your Windows directory.

CDBurnerXP

This is probably the best and easiest disc burning software app that I have ever used. Simply choose which one you want, then you will see your hard drive on the left and the disc space on the right. Then it’s just a case of dragging and dropping the files from your hard drive to the disc space. Then watch it start burning.

CCleaner

We were big fans of CCleaner here at MUO, up until their client became bogged down with ads. However, you might still want to give the portable version a try.

It definitely pays for you to give your computer a thorough cleaning now and then. Clear out all the crap files that are blocking up your system, and more. This is one thing you should schedule on a regular basis. The downside is that the portable version takes ages to start.

Geek Uninstaller

When you uninstall something from your computer, it isn’t really completely uninstalled. Windows leaves behind junk files and empty folders, which over time can clog up the pipes. Geek Uninstaller uninstalls programs properly and makes sure that all the junk goes with it.

Recuva

The portable version of Recuva lets users undelete any file that they’ve recently sent to the garbage. We call this a file recovery tool because it recovers deleted files. There are many kinds of recovery files out there, but the difference is Recuva offers a degree of flexibility that eclipses many paid undeleters.

If you ever accidentally delete something, Recuva should be the first app to check out.

FileBot

Do you have TV show files on your computer with messed up file names? Then FileBot will access various television-related websites such as IMDB and TV.com to get the full episode list for the relevant TV series and your titles will be automatically fixed for you. Pure genius.

Image Editors

GIMP

Who doesn’t know GIMP? The «poor person’s Photoshop», because GIMP emulates a lot of Photoshop features, except for the fact that you are not paying through the nose for GIMP. Plus, like Photoshop, GIMP has a lot of features with a steep learning curve. I have been using GIMP for years, and I know I have only scratched the surface of it.

JPEG View

As the name of the app indicates, JPEG View can open, and view, JPEG images. It also views BMP, PNG, GIF and TIFF images (and others). You can also do some basic editing on those images such as adjusting the contrast, lighting, sharpness, and a few others.

It’s more or less a dead-simple image view application. While some might prefer the complexity of IrfanView, others might prefer the simplicity of JPEG View.

Media Editors

Audacity

Audacity is the best free audio editor around. It should be in everyone’s toolbox. Not only is it easy to learn, Audacity is versatile. It can cut, copy, splice, and mix audio, record live files, change the speed and pitch of a recording, and import/export some obscure file formats.

CDex

CDex is the best, easiest, and fastest CD ripper ever made. It has the ability to rip the discs into MP3 files, along with its metadata (by connecting with a «remote database»). You can add all of the music to new playlists, as well as have the computer shutdown when the ripping has finished, so this is an ideal «start it and go to bed» app.

It’s important to note that CDex is better than the paid apps out there. Don’t bother with the rest if you need to pull audio tracks off a CD.

MP3tag

If CDex doesn’t cut it for managing your massive music library, then that’s where the tag editor Mp3tag comes in. Simply load the relevant songs into MP3tag, and from there you can fix the title of the song, the singer/band, album name, and album artwork. Save your work and bingo, your MP3 files are fixed.

Avidemux

Avidemux is a video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering, and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue, and powerful scripting capabilities.

VirtualDub

VirtualDub Portable is a video-capture and video-processing app. It includes batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files. It can also be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

Advanced Features

These advanced features require you to edit the PortableAppsMenu.ini file within your X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data directory. You need to edit it with the Platform closed and be sure to add the entry (or edit the existing entry if it is already there) to the section unless otherwise noted.

• Global Hot Key (11.1 and up) — By default, the platform uses a global hot key of Ctrl-Alt-Space to show the menu from other apps. You can select an additional option or disable it by changing the line GlobalHotKey=CTRL-ALT-SPACE to another value. Valid entries are CTRL-ALT-SPACE, CTRL-ALT-P, CTRL-ALT-M, CTRL-SPACE, WIN-ALT-SPACE and DISABLED. Note that WIN-ALT-SPACE will not work on many versions of Windows.
• Portable TEMP Directory — If you create a directory called TempForPortableApps in the same directory as Start.exe (‘next to’ the PortableApps and Documents directories), the platform will use that as the TEMP directory for all apps it launches. Note that any local apps launched from the platform or its apps will also use this as TEMP, so use with caution!

Advanced options no longer listed separately here have now been added to the PortableApps.com Platform’s expanded Options window, mostly on the Advanced tab.

Uninstalling the PortableApps.com Platform

Since the PortableApps.com Platform is self-contained, uninstalling is a snap. To remove, you simply delete its files. This would be the Documents and PortableApps directories as well as the Start.exe and autorun.inf files in the root directory. If you don’t have any data you wish to save on your portable device, you could also format it if you’d like. If you do have data within the Documents directory you’d like to save, simply delete the directories you don’t wish to keep. To remove the custom icons on the Documents directory (or any others), just delete the hidden desktop.ini file within each directory.

Modifications

I made some modifications to the default ZIPped version of FileZilla
to make it more USB key friendly (decreasing total install size and
backing up configurations). These changes are listed here so you’ll
know what they are, and so you can recreate the process, if so desired.

• Friendly Launcher — FileZilla Portable Launcher 1.1.1.6 is included by default. It backs up your
  settings file to the settings directory for easier data backups.
• EXEs and DLLs Compressed — All EXEs and DLLs were recompressed using UPX. This gets our installed
  size down to one that is a bit more manageable. Additionally, it will speed up use
  when you’re running over USB 1.1. The options used were: —best —compress-icons=0 —nrv2d —crp-ms=999999 -k
• Debug Files Removed — The debug files were removed to save space.

PNotes Portable is an easy to use sticky notes manager with skins, flexible display options, and a built-in scheduler. You can place it on your USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive or a CD and use it on any computer, without leaving any personal information behind.

Q10 Minimalist Word Processor

Q10 is a distraction-free word processor that completely fills the screen up with the word processor. You have to hit Ctrl + Q or the Windows key to leave the interface.

Q10 comes with and without spell checking. Its version with spell check enabled has an installed size of 896 kilobytes. It’s easily the slimmest word processor that I’m aware of.

Aside from the optional spell-check feature, you also get a word and page count. Otherwise, that’s everything.

В разделе «Просмотр» отрывается диск (флешка) или папка с PortableApps.

С помощью раздела «Архивация» можно создать резервную копию PortableApps.com с установленными портативными программами, или восстановить PortableApps.com Platform из резервной копии.

Из раздела «Приложения» можно проверить обновления, загрузить новое приложение, установить приложение, обновить иконки, показать скрытые иконки.

Для изменения параметров приложения нажмите на «Настройки». В окне «Настройка» организуйте список приложений по своим предпочтениям, выберите подходящую тему оформления.

В правом нижнем углу приложения расположены две кнопки: для выключения компьютера и для отключения PortableApps Platform.

Disabling a Portable App’s Splash Screen

Many apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format include splash screens so the user sees quick feedback an app is starting on slower flash media and doesn’t accidentally try to start it again. The splash screens also serve to let users know that they’re using a repackaged version of an app and to visit us first for portable support issues. If you’d prefer not to see the splash screen, disabling it is a snap.

PortableApps.com Platform — Click Options and select the Advanced tab. There, you’ll see a checkbox to disable splash screens across all our apps. Note that this will only affect splash screens shown by the PortableApps.com Launcher and not splash screens displayed by the apps themselves (GIMP, LibreOffice, etc).

Standalone — Within the AppNamePortable\Other\Source directory (where AppName is the name of the app you’re working with), you’ll find an AppNamePortable.ini file that includes some example options. Copy this file to the AppNamePortable directory and rename it, if necessary, to the name of the app (FirefoxPortable.ini or similar). Open the file within your preferred text editor, something like Notepad++ Portable. Within, you’ll find an entry DisableSplashScreen=false which just needs to be set to true. Save the file and the app will launch without the splash screen. This setting will be remembered as you upgrade the app, too.

Some apps include their own splash screen within the apps themselves (GIMP, LibreOffice, Scribus, etc). For these splash screens, there is sometimes an option within the Options of the app to disable it, a specific text file to modify, or a command line option to pass (which the PA.c Launcher can usually pass via the AdditionalParameters= setting in the INI file mentioned in the «Standalone» section above. You’ll need to check the app’s documentation from the publisher to be sure.

PortableApps Review

PortableApps is another in the growing list of decentralized software suites. Like many of the other portable software solutions, PortableApps offers its user the ability to access a wide array of software from any PC in the world. PortableApps can be run off of external drives or flash drives, but where it sets itself apart from the crowd is in the ability to run it from any cloud hosting service.

PortableApps software packages can be managed and ran from cloud services like DropBox and Google Drive. This is the most, genuinely portable “portable software” solutions. Being able to run software like GIMP, Blender, LibreOffice, and Thunderbird from the cloud means as long as you can connect to the Internet, you are at your home PC.

The most significant and most apparent trade-off here is that if the internet goes out, or you are in a remote location, you might be better served with the USB version of PortableApps.

The software featured in PortableApps is truly impressive. It boasts over 400 different apps that are at your disposal. Even if fully operating out of PortableApps seems a little daunting, you can always try to run a few apps from Google Drive and feel it out.

You can run everything from a full software development suite to a graphic design studio, and even Linux gaming classics like the Battle for Wesnoth and NetHack. It’s nice to have games being openly including in the software offerings here. Too often portable software solutions aim too directly at the mobile business crowd and lose the charm of really having your home PC—games and all—with you on the fly.

Like other portable software solutions, PortableApps allows you to operate semi-independently from the host PC you are running your software from. The host PC’s reg files won’t log your activity and if you have the same software on the host PC, say you run PortableApps’ Battle for Wesnoth, and there is another copy on the host PC, the software will function separately.

That means your files and settings won’t clash with theirs and vice versa. This allows you to safely work without the added worry of corrupting either your data or the host PCs.

Portable software solutions like this are great for people who are always on the move. Maybe you travel for work, or you are constantly bouncing between different offices and don’t feel like hauling a laptop with the power to run Blender with you wherever you go.

They’re also great for the security minded as they lower your odds of being hit with some cyber attack and they also come with plenty of security tools. PortableApps allows you the freedom to work where you need to, but also keeps the home PC touch by holding on to the games and a wide range of software.

Upgrading FileZilla Portable / Importing Old Settings

To upgrade to a newer version of FileZilla Portable, just install a new version right over your old version. All your settings will be preserved.

When upgrading from a 2.x version of FileZilla to a 3.x version, your old settings file can not be automatically upgraded and will be lost if you don’t manually save them. This is a limitation of FileZilla itself. Before upgrading, make a backup copy of your FileZilla.xml settings file from X:\PortableApps\FileZillaPortable\Data\settings\FileZilla.xml to a safe location.

After upgrading FileZilla Portable, just select Edit and then Import from the main menu and open up the file containing your old settings. FileZilla will then import your old settings and be able to use them. Some advanced settings like remote start directories will not be imported and you’ll need to set them up again.

Adding Other Apps to the PortableApps.com Menu

The PortableApps.com Menu will also work with other standalone and portable apps. You just need to place them in a directory «next to» the PortableApps.com directory. So, in a standard layout, you’d create a directory within the X:\PortableApps directory and place it within there. For example, if you have a portable program MyApp.exe, you could create a folder called X:\PortableApps\MyApp\ and place MyApp.exe and all its files within there. Then, just click Apps — Refresh App Icons within the PortableApps.com Menu and your new app will show up.

It should be noted that, unlike apps in PortableApps.com Format, other apps labeled as ‘portable’ may not meet the definition of a portable app according to PortableApps.com. They could leave things behind on the local PC or some functionality may break as you move PCs. You will need to check with the provider to ensure it is fully portable. Additionally, apps not in PortableApps.com Format will not have their data backed up when you select to only backup app data using the platform’s backup feature. It will be backed up during a full backup, though.

Security and Privacy

KeePass

Never a day goes by without some kind of password hack being reported in the news. It’s important that you don’t reuse your passwords for different accounts. Also, make each password a bit more difficult than PASSWORD or 12345. Something along the lines of D?oqu?l8bhIY#|I+^\|&S~5Te is in order. But how do you remember that? You use a password manager.

I use a combination of LastPass with KeePass. You can export your LastPass passwords to KeePass. Once you’ve made the transfer you have a copy of your passwords in case anything ever happens to LastPass.

Eraser

If you are selling your computer, or are security conscious, then Eraser should be on your USB stick. The reason you need a secure erase method is that Windows files can be recovered even after you clear the Windows garbage can. The Windows trash can merely removes the file and gives you back disk space—but the file is still there. Anyone with the right software (readily and easily available online) could bring the file back. Eraser puts a stop to that.

Simply drag the files you want nuked into the Eraser window and let it do its work. By the time it is finished, those files will have been consigned to oblivion, and you can rest easy that your secrets are safe with you, and you only.

PWGen

PWGen is a password generator which will create for you large amounts of cryptographically-secure passwords or passphrases consisting of randomly drawn words from a dictionary. PWGen provides lots of options to customize passwords to the users’ various needs.

ClamWin

ClamWin is an antivirus program, which gives you features such as detecting viruses (obviously), as well as regular updates to the virus engine. You have to remember though that due to its portable nature, this is not a real-time scanner. This means that it will only detect a virus if you manually give it a file to check. Plus scheduled scans and updates are also not possible so you have to manually update it yourself.

CyberShredder

CyberShredder is an Eraser alternative. Just drag-and-drop files onto the CyberShredder interface and kiss those files goodbye.

If you are the paranoid type (and you should, because they really are out to get you), then Cybershredder is essential for making sure those deleted files stay deleted.

Running the Platform from a UNC Path

As of version 12.0, the PortableApps.com Platform supports running from a UNC path directly. Previously, a mapped drive letter was required. Most apps should function from a UNC path as well.

Unfortunately, there is a bug in the PortableApps.com Installer (the packaging format used by all our apps) prior to 3.0.12 that causes them to be unable to install due to not enough free space on UNC paths when run in automatic mode. Automatic mode occurs when the platform runs the installers directly either through the platform’s built in app store, updater or via the Apps — Install a New App option.

The workaround for now is to map a drive letter to your UNC path that contains the PortableApps.com Platform. You can also run the .paf.exe installers directly and select the \\Server\ShareName\Path\PortableApps directory to install to by browsing so the final path is \\Server\ShareName\Path\PortableApps\AppNamePortable. We will also be continuing to update our installers to the new format for full compatibility with UNC paths.

You may receive a message when trying to run EXE files from your UNC path similar to: ‘Security Warning — We can’t verify who created this file. Are you sure you want to run this file?’. This is because Windows hasn’t determined that the UNC path is on your local Intranet. To fix this error:

1. Open your Network and Sharing Center by clicking Start — Control Panel — Network and Sharing Center
2. Within the Network and Sharing Center, click on Internet Options in the lower left
3. In the Internet Properties window, select the Security tab
4. In the Security tab, click Local intranet and then click Sites
5. In the Local intranet window, click the Advanced button
6. In the new window, enter the \\server\share within the ‘Add this webdite to the zone:’ box and click Add. It will appear under the Websites list as ‘file://server’ or similar.
7. Click close, OK, OK on the various windows and then close the Internet and Sharing Center.
8. You should now be able to run EXE files from this server without Windows prompting you with security warnings.
